lyrics

Small Birds Flown - poem by Graham Kershaw

Household scents peel away:
lavender, garlic, tea and herbs,
bleach, hot cotton, lemon, yeast,
eucalypt, blood and bone.

Her brittle air finds no purchase
in my presence, curiosity dies
walking through the door. And yet
she is more beautiful than ever before.

She wears her clothes so loosely
I fear they will fall. I smell salt in her hair,
scent of some beach I’ll never quite reach,
a crystalline haze too faint to recall.

The nervous play of her fingers
at throat and fringe – they are gone,
small birds flown. All that is left
looks like happiness to me.
