about

Black Hammer is Jen Lush’s first single from her second studio album ‘Let Loose The Beating Birds’ released in August 2021. Lyrics by Tobin Lush, music by Jen Lush, performed by Jen & band (Sam Cagney, James Brown, Paul Angus and Mark Seddon.) Produced, recorded, engineered and mixed at the beautiful Wizard Tone Studios by James Brown, mastered by Michael Lynch.

“I see all art as a kind of revenge on circumstance and that’s what this is, the lyrics present ‘I’ as the natural world and the ‘you’ as the Black hammer. The black hammer being a metaphor for blind environmental politics motivated by greed, power and fear. Donella Meadows said ‘Growth is one of the stupidest purposes ever invented by any culture. We’ve got to have an enough.’ Knowing this we can contribute to demanding and creating a sustainable economic system that respects the intrinsic value of the natural world and is radically better for humanity.” - Tobin Lush

lyrics

silent riot in the wind

Everything in between

I was the memory at your table
I was the name in the river
Low on a losing streak
In a landscape of time

You were the black
You were the fake
Mining our hearts out, falling
Soft like a hammer

You were the towers of glass
You were the roving eye
night shot like a cannonball
Black above the masses

You were under the wheels
You were
