Poets commentary:

This is Canto 43, from my long poem, Songs of the Last Chinese Poet, published by Wild Peony in Sydney in 1997, the second book of poetry I got published in Australia since I went to the country in 1991, the first book being Moon over Melbourne and Other Poems (Papyrus Publishing, 1995).

I took a year to complete Songs while working on my PhD thesis at La Trobe University (1991-1994). The book records my painful and alienated experience in Australia.

I live entirely
for myself
in this perfect prison
of freedom
at night
in the winter
I talk to myself
remembering the past
about myself
the world within
is all I have
I squeeze it
until I myself
come out
in myriad forms
