about

Poets commentary:

So about my experience of writing this poem is came back to the ugly time of John Howard very racist government. We went in a bus with a group of young people and adults to visited  the refugees at the Baxter Detention Centre  and we meet all young refugees at this time. It was so sad to see them in that unhuman condition. not sign of hope on their eyes only desperation. We came back to Adelaide with a broken hearts and also with the determination to make more awareness and  more public actions in solidarity with them; after a several months we new Daggie Sheltens was moved to a RAH and after Glenside’s hospital we never give up to supported him until our struggle became a victory  after seven long years of injustice end and our friends become to be part of our Adelaide’s life with a permanent t visa.  ‘Long live to all who struggle for compassion and Justice.’

lyrics

Poem:

The sea is a boat on his dream.
The darkness at the shore embraces
It’s journey to a new land.
His visa is only a wave without a name.
Baxter, desert of long sentences
Locked up his youth.
Now his eyes are broken wings.
Now his heart is a cloud in a cage at the detention centre.
He knew where he was in that white room.
He crashed his dream with a native tree in Glenside’s hospital.
His mind is a wounded hope for all within the wire desert
Within the white room.
His mind is a bird without air or sky to fly.
Please let him be a bird in this land.
