Poets Commentary:

‘Double Glaze’ is the title poem of a book with the over-arching theme of work/life balance. The collection is organised around four key themes: work; the commute; writing; and family. Double glaze plays with the double gaze of the poetic imagination, and as a Spanish speaker and translator, the bicultural gaze of the bilingual subject. The double glaze of the office window both insulates and isolates, and this particular poem maps a journey from a depressed state of mind to a sense of social awareness and connectivity. Images of drowning children crash against this reality, a window into the desperate plight of refugees, dying for what we so easily take for granted. Questions about Australia’s treatment of refugees shake the foundations of our democracy and values, and the collective failure to act in the face of these injustices reinforces our isolation as citizens. Images of people waving and journeys home seek to build empathy and break down the distance between the two realities, revealing our common humanity and reinforcing that we are all in this together.

lyrics

Poem:

sometimes
it’s like a low tide
& the objects
on my desk
are left
stranded
around me
as I gaze
out the office
window
looking
for something
outside of me
to fill
the emptiness
it might
begin
the next
morning
with a small
exchange
in the coffee
shop
where
we create
shared meaning
around
an experience
even if it was only
reality tv
& soon
there’s a density
to things
and the collective
flow slowly
lifts
until I find myself
in a pub
laughing
over after work
drinks
while above us
in a window
in the corner
of the room
I see them
crashing
against
the edge
of this
desperate
to get in
but we can’t
hear them
above
the background
noise
I see their children
drowning
but don’t
mention this
as we wave
goodbye
& take
our separate
journeys
home.
