about

Reflecting on the enormity of the effect of the recent bushfires on our landscape, our wildlife and our people. The devastation, the upheaval, the fear and the tenuous grip we have on our environment in the face of such a force as a bushfire. I read a lot of people’s accounts of what they were going through. This song is my interpretation of the returning to home, the burnt out land, the uncertainty of what will be found. It references a poem by David Brooks – Swallows from his book Open House.

lyrics

Cinder & Stone - Jen Lush

I’m going home as the fire wind blows again
taking what’s left of the blackened and molten
above us birds sever words with their silence

cinder and stone and the muddy rain falls away
leaving its dark tail
remembering all that we left behind
wasn’t time to save all the small things

as the birds flicker and twist so does my heart
as the fire flickers and twists so does my heart

I’m going home to the disarray, new decay
follow my way back to know that I’m real
not a closing door
fold away all that I’ve worked for

as the birds flicker and twist so does my heart
as the fire flickers and twists so does my heart
as the wind flickers and twists so does my heart
so does my heart
trap door heart
