The Seagull
you didn’t throw the first stone
but the one that left your hand made its mark upon the sand
I wonder had you known
and did the seagull feel the coming dark?
I never will forget
I can’t forget the sound of falling
did you ever feel regret calling you back to the day
back to the day
and that one stone?
In whose honour is she gone?
throwing pebbles after birds when sticks and stones are worse than words
marbles in my mouth
imprisoned in the circle of her eye
I never will forget
forget the sound of stone on feather and bone
I’d hold her in my hands if I went back to the day
back to that day
I’d send all those seagulls away
and stones sink in quicksand below
and boys in the sand dunes never were
to the time before her freedom had flown
with that one stone

World's On A Wire

World’s On A Wire - Jen Lush / words by Tobin Lush
little bird, do you have the key?
what’s it like up above
up above here?
when the light falls through the wind
I can’t see what you’ve got for me
well the world’s on a wire so life’s not what it used to be
are you alone with the melody?
heaven and hell are not what they seem
like the storm in my mouth
calls to the valley from the balcony
well the world’s on a wire so life’s not what it used to be
little bird, do you have the key?
what’s it like up above
up above here?
but I’ve seen you above the town
dull the noise between the sound
well the world’s on a wire so life’s not what it used to be

Fire Ground - Jen Lush / words by Tobin Lush
can i shoot my gun
to lose my mind
across the lake
to the fire ground
cut across the mountains
blowin through the haze
in a hall of mirrors
shifting the gaze
what will you remember?
what will you forget?
what will you remember?
what will you forget?
black skies in the morning
red light, white night
washed up
in a post-truth era
in an untethered hell
of our own making
moving across the bones
to kindle the names
glowing before your eyes
body a hurricane
searched among the words
through a million years
on the grounds below
a reckoning for all of us

Glass

Glass - Jen Lush
if i could hold you in glass
keep you for all the days
give back the time i’ll waste
i need you just as you are
don’t turn another page
lest i forget this day
the buildings will outlive us all - harmony
the trees watch us come and go - harmony
but i am a house made of clay
if i could hold you in glass
slow down to still the signs
buy me a little time
the buildings will outlive us all
the trees watch us come and go
but i am a leaf in the wind
and i am a house made of clay

Dust

Dust - Jen Lush
i’m far away from you
i’m far away from you
i’m twenty five miles just a hope on the horizon of truth
it’s far away from me
you’re far away from me
a locked box i buried down deep in the root of a tree
before we pillage and plunder
all the best parts of what we both are
we’ll hold up the tattered remains
and blow them to life
i’m talking in my sleep
you’re talking in my sleep
utterings falling like dust into places
lost in the places i can’t sweep
and i can’t help but wonder
if they’ll work their way down under the earth
to rest on the box of old things
and bring them to light

Gold Thread

Gold Thread - Jen Lush
the dawn pulls back it’s cover
the ground beneath succumbs to vital signs
take notice of the fault lines
i’m two parts underwater
one part staying dry above the tide
need more than oxygen to stay alive
the kettle sings to waking kids
i watch the golden lines spill from their lips
wrapped in threads of gold
i’m reaching in, i’m digging down for the gold thread
the fine spun gold stronger than blood
just say the word
the day’s story hangs in folds
here a floating book, now a bath gone cold
get ready for the army of words
but the afternoon brings gossamer gold
weaving round my legs and button holes
in the seams of all I know
i’m reaching in, i’m digging down for the gold thread
the fine spun gold
the paper day unfolds like a crane
birds come as they always do
here a beak, now a flapping wing
now in this room of formless dark
tongue and groove and dry and spitting sparks
looking for a glimpse of gold
there’s a hummingbird inside my chest
that ties the tangled heart to flesh and breath
looking for a place to rest

The Valley

The Valley - Jen Lush
disarm me
the armour is falling
falling to rest
can i hold the weight of what i have left
loosened
i’m losing my hold
under all of my clothes
unraveling slowly playing my roles
soldiering on and sewing up holes
weightless
with the weight of the mourning
i’m floating above
anchor me down before i lift off
wakeful
in the wake of the warring
i’m a thousand years old
and i’m wondering what the hell i’ve been sold
in the aftershocks of all that i’ve known
wide awake in slumber high up on the hill
tethered here with you
i can see the greenest view
embers
i remember them all
but the endings are mine
in the grey of violence rushing behind
daunted
in the dawning of living
with my face to the wall
my heart still beats in spite of it all
with one foot after the other i go

Black Hammer - Jen Lush / words by Tobin Lush
i was the hope of a hundred men
i was the echo in the valley
night blind in the canyon
silent riot in the wind
i was the car leaving the road
i was the ghost between the trees
above the below and below the above
everything in between
i was the memory at your table
i was the name in the river
low on a losing streak
in a landscape of time
you were the black
you were the fake
mining our hearts out, falling
soft like a hammer
you were the towers of glass
you were the roving eye
night shot like a cannon ball
black above the masses
you were under the wheels
you were

Crush

|

Crush - Jen Lush
when you turned to me in the night
when my arms were unattached
and my feet were like ice
water pooling on the sheets
when the crush on my chest
from a small refrigerator
held back my breath
held back my breath
when I was still as a stone
with the sound of your voice in the dark
in the dark
the bed is so cold tonight
i’m looking for the moon
i see it high over the city
trying to pass by my eyes unnoticed
it’s out of my grasp
i bring the tides in and out
with all of my breath
all of my breath
a possum scatters along the gutter like a warning
the night birds have held back their breath with waiting
waiting

Cinder & Stone

Cinder & Stone - Jen Lush
I’m going home as the fire wind blows again
taking what’s left of the blackened and molten
above us birds sever words with their silence
cinder and stone and the muddy rain falls away
leaving its dark tail
remembering all that we left behind
wasn’t time to save all the small things
as the birds flicker and twist so does my heart
as the fire flickers and twists so does my heart
I’m going home to the disarray, new decay
follow my way back to know that I’m real
not a closing door
fold away all that I’ve worked for
as the birds flicker and twist so does my heart
as the fire flickers and twists so does my heart
as the wind flickers and twists so does my heart
so does my heart
trap door heart

Bend The Trees

Bend The Trees - Jen Lush
you drew me down into the garden at night
by the fire
gathering warm
legs in the rain children fold paper planes in the dark
under table
water-flecked night
open furrows furl in the dark
fall in the dark
curving sorrows curl in the dark
call in the dark of my ear
salt of my eyes water of yours hand on your skin
the taste of autumn
coming to earth
those woven words loop in my cardigan caught on a nail
light and sorrow
plain and purl
open furrows furl in the dark
fall in the dark
curving sorrows curl in the dark
call in the dark
cloven shadows follow the path
fall on the path
to my ear
